Proficiency in English & Numeracy

In addition to standard entry requirements, all candidates applying for teacher training courses starting in Sept 2019 were required by the Department of Education (DfE), first to pass government tests in literacy and numeracy, known as the 'DfE Skills Tests'.

The 'DfE Skills Tests' have now been abolished by DfE for those applying for teacher training courses starting in Sept 2020.  DfE have clarified that those studying to become a qualified teacher will need to demonstrate their proficiency in functional (everyday) English and numeracy by the end of the course in order to qualify.

At interview you may therefore be asked to take some English and numeracy tests simply to assess your initial proficiency in functional English and numeracy.  Arrangements for these will be clarified in interview letters.
