WLTSA Primary School Bursaries
We have 33 primary schools with vacancies for primary trainees on unsalaried courses and all of them are aware that for trainees, the cost can be significant. From 2021, the DfE offers no bursaries at all for general primary.
21 of our primary schools with unsalaried courses are however able to offer a school bursary of their own to trainees on general primary courses.
The school bursaries range from £2,000 to £9,000 depending on the school. We are unaware of any other primary schools in the country offering any additional funding at all, let alone at this sort of level. We have set up specific unsalaried primary courses for the schools that can offer their own bursary in addition to our other standard unsalaried primary courses. You can see this in our vacancy list. These bursaries are not means tested.
UDPATE 19 OCTOBER: Following the DfE's decision last week to withdraw all funding for primary salaried programmes, it is likely that a number of schools planning to offer salaried programmes will now offer unsalaried programmes with bursaries. We should have these additional schools confirmed by Friday 23 October.
Remember that on all unsalaried programmes (whether or not they have a school bursary), tuition fee and maintenance loans from Student Finance England are also available subject to eligibility. You would also be able to get a student oyster card and in many boroughs, reduced council tax as a full time student.
WLTSA SCHOOL BURSARY GENERAL CONDITIONS
The school bursary is paid termly in three equal instalments and would be dependent upon the host school deeming the trainee to be making satisfactory progress. The school bursaries would be subject to taxation (although it may well fall under your tax threshold) and those receiving such payment will be required to invoice the school by letter, including a ‘Unique Reference Number’ provided by HMRC.
Any trainee receiving a bursary would be expected to remain at the school at least until the end of the school’s summer term in July 2021. Payment of the bursaries is the responsibility of the host school (as opposed to WLTSA) and could be discussed at interview as appropriate.
See below the unsalaried primary courses that come with the additional bursary and the level of the bursary available from each school.
